The tsunami was monitored travelling across the Pacific Ocean before washing ashore near Christchurch. Experts say the tiny tsunami is a warning of what might happen if a larger tremor hits South America. New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmosphere Research said a bigger wave could decimate low-lying areas. Oceanographer Basil Stanton told Wellingon's Evening Post: "On the coast you would see tsunami as rapid changes in sea level, not the giant, towering waves of the movies."
